Scotland to Newcastle Ferry

A mill has been on this site since the 1500s but the current Preston Mill and Kiln are dated around the 1700s. All are powered by the water wheel (top left). It was a commercial mill until 1959 and they have it all still in working order. You can walk from the mill passed fields of barley (bottom right) across the River Tyne to another unusual structure - the beehive-shaped Phantassie Doocot (bottom left). It has a French style horseshoe parapet, built in the 1500s to house 500 pigeons. This was an interesting stop!
